Brainspotting: A Deeper Approach to Trauma Healing

When Talking Is not Enough

Many people come to therapy ready to talk, and oftentimes, talking helps. But for trauma, chronic stress, or deeply rooted emotional pain, insight alone may not create relief.

You may understand why something affects you and still feel triggered, anxious, or emotionally flooded.

This is where Brainspotting can help.

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a brain-based therapy developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. It works on the understanding that trauma and emotional pain are often stored in subcortical areas of the brain, and traditional talk therapy does not always fully access those areas.

A "brainspot" is an eye position that correlates with emotional activation in the brain. By maintaining focus on this eye position while processing in a safe therapeutic environment, the brain can begin to release and reorganize unresolved trauma.

How Brainspotting Is Different From Traditional Therapy

Traditional therapy works primarily through the neocortex, which is involved in cognition: logical thinking, examining thoughts, beliefs, and patterns.

Brainspotting works from the bottom up:

  • It accesses the body's stored emotional memory.
  • It supports nervous system regulation.
  • It allows processing without forcing verbal explanation.

This is especially helpful for:

  • Trauma (single incident or complex)
  • Anxiety that feels "stuck"
  • Medical trauma
  • Childhood emotional wounds
  • Performance blocks
  • Grief

What a Session Looks Like

A Brainspotting session is calm and focused.

  • Identify an issue you would like to work on
  • Notice where you feel activation in your body
  • Use guided eye positioning to locate a brainspot
  • Process internally while I provide attuned, steady support

You are always in control. There is no pressure to relive experiences in detail.

Why It Can Be Powerful

"The body keeps the score."
- Bessel van der Kolk

Trauma is not just a memory; it is a nervous system imprint.

Brainspotting allows the brain to process what was previously overwhelming, helping reduce reactivity and increase emotional flexibility.

Many clients describe:

  • Feeling lighter
  • Reduced triggers
  • Greater clarity
  • A deeper sense of integration
