Understanding Domestic Violence: Support and Healing

Understanding Domestic Violence

Domestic violence affects people from all backgrounds, cultures, and communities. It is not only physical; it can take many forms, including emotional, verbal, psychological, financial, sexual, and spiritual or cultural abuse.

Living with abuse can leave someone feeling isolated, afraid, or unsure of where to turn.

Recognizing the Different Types of Abuse

Domestic violence is often about power and control rather than love. Some forms include:

  • Physical abuse: Hitting, slapping, pushing, choking, or other harm to the body
  • Emotional or verbal abuse: Name-calling, humiliation, or constant criticism
  • Psychological abuse: Gaslighting, threats, intimidation, or manipulation
  • Financial abuse: Controlling money, restricting work, or limiting access to resources
  • Sexual abuse: Coercion, assault, or forcing unwanted sexual activity
  • Spiritual or cultural abuse: Using beliefs, traditions, or family expectations to control or shame

No matter the form, abuse is never the survivor's fault.

The Impact of Domestic Violence

Experiencing abuse can affect mental, emotional, and physical health. Survivors may feel anxious, depressed, or struggle with self-esteem and trust.

They may experience flashbacks, emotional triggers, or feel trapped by cultural or family expectations. These are normal responses to abnormal situations, and healing is possible.

Taking Steps Toward Safety

Reaching out for help takes courage. Some ways to start include:

  • Seeking therapy or counselling to process experiences and build coping skills
  • Creating a safety plan for urgent or unsafe situations
  • Accessing support networks of trusted friends, family, or culturally sensitive community organizations
  • Learning about legal protections such as restraining orders or reporting options

How Therapy Can Help

  • Understand the impact of abuse on emotions, thoughts, and relationships
  • Process feelings of shame, guilt, or self-blame
  • Learn coping strategies for stress, anxiety, or flashbacks
  • Build confidence and boundaries
  • Explore healing in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive way
